Health and Safety and Your School (On-line Course) in association with the Health and Safety Authority
This on-line course introduces teachers and schools leader to the basic principles of managing health and safety in the school. It encourages teacher reflection on hazard identification, risk assessments and the writing of the safety statement. End of unit assessments and off-line assessments complement the course content. The course has been developed by the Health and Safety Authority.
This course has been approved for inclusion in Cursaí Samhraidh 2009. Completion of course entitles participants to three EPV days. The course is 20 hours On-line e-learning including assessments and assignments. Assignments to be submitted within one week of completion of the course. Participants must successfully complete end-of-unit assessments before moving on to next unit. Assessments are principally multiple choice. Assignments will be school specific exercises drawn from course content. An on-line forum will allow participants to exchange views with each other on matters raised on the course. The Health and Safety Authority will provide input into the forum, periodically.
The content of the course will include the following:

Very brief overview of legislation
- Two key legal terms- reasonably practicable / competence
- Responsibilities and duties
- The Safety Statement
- Understanding hazards, risks and controls
- Measuring risk
- General principles of prevention
- Emergency planning
- Accident reporting
- Managing health and safety
As per current Summer Course (online) Criteria teachers can only do 1 Online Course for which they earn EPV days. However, the TES has now agreed that, for the 2009 Summer Courses, a teacher may do 1 Online Course and 1 Blended Learning Course and earn EPV days for both courses (e.g. 4 days).
