This course is an exciting, practical, interactive and informative look at our environment and our role within it.

Aims:
  • To develop an appreciation of the connections between the natural environment, built environment, impacts of everyday actions on our environment and environmental management.
  • To provide practical solutions to environmental management within a school, aided by the themes in the Green Schools programme.  

This course will include:
  • The Green-Schools programme, introducing the themes of Green-Schools and the links between Green-Schools and the primary school curriculum.
  • The end of our throw away society - a look at waste management.
  • Fostering a practical understanding of waste management at a local level.
  • Monitoring waste in a school environment.
  • Composting for Schools Workshop.
  • Water & the big picture - The Water Cycle.
  • The Blue Flag & Clean Coast programmes  
  • Water; from the treatment plant to your home and the 'Slow the Flow' campaign
  • Water conservation measures for schools
  • Our oceans - Deep Blue
  • Investigation of our oceans and the life within it.
  • Energy - Ireland, Europe & the World
  • Energy conservation measures for schools
  • Formulating an energy plan for a school which would include micro management & macro management techniques.
  • Energy experiments for the Classroom..
  • The Green-Schools Travel Programme.
  • Making the connection between health and transport.
  • Teachers participate in a Walkability Audit: evaluating how pedestrian-friendly the route is by assessing the quality of footpaths, lighting, traffic speeds, infrastructure, safety, etc. 
  • Field trip to Brigit's Garden 
  • Includes Mapping & Identification route for walkability audit (google maps)
  • Initiatives to promote sustainable travel in schools & Walking Buses.
  • Cycling Safely to School.
  • Peer to peer postcard campaign art activity.
  • Teaching children about climate change.
  • Science Activities: Global Warming.
  • Food web eco- systems activity. 
  • Biodiversity in your school garden.
