Droichead Information Session for Principals
The National Induction Programme for Teachers (NIPT) invite primary school principals to an information session on Droichead – the new proposed model of induction and probation. The information session will take place Tuesday 26th May 2015 in Galway Education Centre @ 3.30pm to 5.00pm.
The session will provide you with…
an understanding of the Droichead pilot model
an opportunity to hear from a principal already engaging with the process
an opportunity to ask questions
The session will be facilitated by Noel Loftus, Regional Development Officer with the NIPT. The NIPT provide support and training for schools currently engaged in the Droichead pilot.
Tea / Coffee and refreshments will be available from 3.15pm.

Shakespeare’s most celebrated and performed play is brought to life in Cyclone Rep’s unique style. The Hamlet Session is an entertaining and engaging student-centred performance, intertwined with analysis of main themes and characters, audience participation, discussions and Q&A sessions.
With the aid of animation, music, dynamic performances and a good dose of humour, this abrdiged version of the play, tracks the plot of Hamlet from the beginning to the finale.
Hamlet is arguably The Bard’s greatest play – Cyclone Rep Hamlet Session’s main goal is to help learners access, understand and enjoy it!

Read More »Brave-hearted team ‘Mel Gibson’ out-muscled all challengers to take the Mini Sumo title with its Lethal Weapon of a robot at this year’s Irish Robotics Championship, with ‘The German Whip’ taking the Line Follower F1 prize.
This edition of the competition was held in Galway, with champions ‘Mel Gibson’ and the runners up in both sections, ‘The Speedster’ and ‘Calid’, each coming from St. Gerald’s College in Castlebar.
Supported by EA Games, the competition pits rival robots from schools throughout the country against one another to battle it out for the coveted trophies, with this edition seeing 450 second-level students competing.
Part of the EXCITED initiative – of which Siliconrepublic.com are media partners – this really cool project is part of a Department of Education platform exploring the integration of technology into education.
Despite the appeal of robot competitions globally – BBC’s Robot Wars, for example, was one of the greatest shows ever made – this is the only such competition aimed exclusively at secondary students, with girls making up more than 40pc of competitors.

A teenage girls-only coding event organised by the Insight Centre for Data Analytics will take place in Dublin City University (DCU) on Saturday March 21st.
There are still places available for Galway attendees to attend a coding event that includes free bus travel to/from Dublin, free lunch and free tuition!
No previous experience is required.

Girls Hack Ireland is being hosted by Dublin City University (DCU) for girls aged from 15 to 17 (girls under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian). The aim is to challenge the perception of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) as ‘boy’ subjects. This ‘hackathon’ event will focus on building websites – the girls will be set a challenge, and will compete in groups or individually to emerge as the overall hackathon winners. They will be strongly supported by a team of mentors, and they need no prior coding experience – we’ll teach them all they need to know. Parents/guardians will be made most welcome at the event, and are absolutely encouraged to sit in on the sessions runs for and with the girls.
Who is running it?
This event is run by the Insight Centre for Data Analytics in partnership with the Stemettes. The Stemettes are a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to inspire the next generation of females into STEM fields. They have run many successful events in the UK, and will be joining us to run this event in Ireland. Visit www.stemettes.org to find out more.

A free bus service from Insight NUI Galway to Dublin City University will be made available for Galway participants.

Schools wishing to arrange ICT training for their staff may do so through funded whole school training opportunities available from PDST Technology in Education through the Education Centre network.
Whole school training is a service through which a tutor delivers CPD to a group of 10 or more teachers in a school. Schools can cluster to make up this minimum number.
Courses may consist of a mix of modules from different courses listed on pdsttechnologyineducation.ie or schools may decide on their own training content depending on their specific ICT requirements.

This year’s eircom Junior Spiders will take place in the Facebook HQ in Dublin on Monday April 20th.
The awards are open to all youths aged between 4-19 years in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Through practical projects, the eircom Junior Spider Awards makes digital fun and encourages thinking about the digital elements behind everyday tasks and objects.
The aim of the awards is to acknowledge the innovation amongst web creators under the age of 19 and to provide an exciting programme that will encourage youths to further develop their technology skills in web & design. The awards programme acts as a catalyst for youths who wish to pursue a career in this sector by providing access to influential business executives.

Dear Colleagues
In October, with your support and help, we put Ireland top of the EU Code Week table with over 500 events. This raised the profile of Ireland as a digital economy. The IDA has used our success to promote further inward investment and therefore provide future careers for our students.
Now we want to put Ireland on the coding map globally. To achieve this, we need your help again please, by signing up for The Hour of Code (www.code.org) during the week of December 8th. As the Hour of Code is focused on teachers and students, we need your support to achieve our target of 500 sign-ups, which will place Ireland on a global leader board.
On the website www.code.org there are a variety of resources which you can use with your students, all with excellent guidelines and support.
